The latest desktop operating system market share numbers for January 2015 show a gain for Windows 8.1 worldwide. However, it also shows that the 13 year old Windows XP is still the second most used PC OS in the world, several months after its official support was cut off by Microsoft.
Net Applications, which gathers its data by monitoring PC access to thousands of websites, says that in January 2015 Windows 8.1 had 10.04% of the OS market share, up from 9.49% from December 2014. Windows 8 claimed 3.79% of the share in January, down from 4.04% in December.
Not surprisingly, Windows 7 remains the top PC OS around the world, with a 55.92% share in January, down from 56.26% in December. Windows XP is still second with an 18.93% share, up slightly from 18.26% in December. Microsoft would certainly like to see that number go down rapidly ahead of the official launch of Windows 10. Speaking of which, Net Applications showed the preview version of the OS being used by 0.05% percent of all PCs worldwide in January, down very slightly from 0.06% in December.
